We didn’t apologise to Buhari for summoning him - House of Representatives

We didn?t apologise to Buhari for summoning him - House of Representatives

The house of representatives has denied report of apologizing to President Muhammadu Buhari for inviting him to brief lawmakers on the state of security in the country.

This came after it was reported that "some lawmakers who sponsored the motion because of Zabamari rice farmers massacre went through the back door to the presidency to apologise over their insistence that the president must appear before the national assembly."

In a statement released on Monday by the house of representatives spokesperson Benjamin Kalu, the lawmakers stated that the President or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate.

The statement read;

“It has come to the knowledge of the house that few sections of the media reported that House apologized to the Presidency over the resolutions of the House which arose from the motion sponsored by members from Borno State, requesting for the invitation of the President to brief the nation on the state of insecurity in the country.

“The President or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate. Where then did the media get the report that the House as an institution apologized to anyone? Media professionals are advised to uphold the ethics of their profession.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House never apologized to anyone for exercising her constitutional mandate and the 9th assembly of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila will not do anything to desecrate or destroy the critical institution of democracy – the Legislature. We strongly believe that President Muhammadu Buhari subscribes to these democratic ethos and ideals as well.”

COVID19 variant: NCAA issues new Travel and Quarantine protocol for all passengers from the United Kingdom and South Africa

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has released new travel and quarantine protocols for all passengers arriving Nigeria from the United Kingdom and South Africa.

The NCAA Director-General, Musa Nuhu, issued the protocol and warnings in a letter released in Abuja on Sunday, December 27. Recall that a new variant of the novel Coronavirus has been recorded in the United Kingdom and South Africa. While other countries have barred all flights from these countries, the NCAA has decided to adopt new guidelines for passengers from these countries.

According to the letter, passengers from these countries must present the following documents in order to be allowed to board their flights to Nigeria.

“Pre-departure “PERMIT TO FLY/QR code“generated from the Nigeria International Travel Portal (https://nitp.ncdc.gov.ng) showing evidence of payment for the post-arrival day 7 COVID-19 PCR test and;

“Documentary evidence of a “NEGATIVE COVID-19“ PCR result done within 96 hours (4 days) of boarding from a verifiable laboratory or health facility”

The NCAA boss stated that passengers would be received and processed separately by the Public Health Authority on arrival in Nigeria. He added that all passengers would be required to self-isolate for seven days after arrival followed by a COVID-19 PCR test.

He stated that a dedicated register of arriving passengers from the United Kingdom and South Africa would be opened for enhanced surveillance and active enforcement of the protocols.

He stated that the failure of the airlines from UK and South Africa to adhere strictly to the new travel rules will attract a penalty of $3,500 for each passenger boarded.

“The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 over the weekend issued new travel rules for passengers on direct flights from the UK and South Africa due to the variance of coronavirus discovered recently in these two countries.

“The penalty is a fine of $3,500 for each passenger boarded and who fails to meet the new travel measures recently announced by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19,” the letter read

The NCAA boss added that punitive measures shall also be taken against airlines that are non-compliant. These punitive measures include but not limited to the following:

“(i) Airlines shall be fined $3,500 (Three thousand five hundred dollars) for each defaulting passenger.

(ii)Airlines may be required to return non-Nigerian defaulting passengers to point of embarkation.

(iii) Repeated non-compliance by any airline will lead to the suspension of the airline’s approval/permit to fly into the country.”

APC may lose 2023 election in Jigawa - Governor Badaru

Governor Muhammad Badaru has expressed fear of the All Progressives Congress (APC) losing the 2023 polls in Jigawa state if the crisis in the party is not checked.

The Governor who said this while inaugurating the APC caretaker committee in Duste on Friday December 25, stated that he would no longer tolerate any APC member associating with factions in the state.

Badaru said;

“I will remain vigilant watching those of you going to meet with the other factional group, you have got enough of my patience, I will no longer tolerate that again.

“It’s interesting to see Borno and Yobe, ever since, APC has been on the helm. Jigawa too, we need to take a lesson and be our brothers keepers, so that we will continue to lead.

“If we allow our personal interest to influence our collective interest, I am assuring we are going to lose and by then my tenure would have elapsed.

“We are the responsible members of the party, I once sacrificed my governorship candidate to Hadejia emirate for sake of peace. However, God later made me the governor.”
