NDLEA arrests four drug merchants in Ondo State

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has seized and burnt over 14.3 tonnes of illicit drugs and crops in six different camps raided by its operatives in Ondo and Edo states.

Haruna Gagara, NDLEA Commandant in Ondo State, told newsmen in Akure that his team also apprehended a notorious cannabis merchant, Ohimai Ayodele, 51, in Uzebba, suspected to be the mastermind of the killing of NDLEA personnel earlier this year.

“Ayodele’s men opened fire in an attempt to resist his arrest. Seven of our personnel got injured in the course of the incident and they are currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” said the narcotic chief.

Gagara further disclosed that the operatives also arrested a 66-year-old cannabis farmer in a deserted locality along Edo/Ondo border. He said that several cannabis nurseries and transplant farms were discovered and destroyed immediately while weapons were seized.

The state commandant said the patrol also invaded Ajobieye forest in Ute, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State in an operation that lasted about eight hours.

“This operation led to the burning of 1,225 bags of Cannabis Sativa, while 174.5 kilograms and samples of fresh plants were brought for prosecution purposes.

“I can assure Nigerians that the operation has caused a serious disruption in the drug market and has checked the likely influx of drugs during this Yuletide.

“The impact of the operation will be felt in the illicit drug market nationwide because about 80 per cent of cannabis market across the country obtain their cannabis supply from states touched by this operation.

“The agency is still awaiting drug merchants on the road to intercept cannabis shipments smuggled into the market. We will sustain the current effort,” the NDLEA chief said.

Gagara, who led the team, said the exercise, tagged “Operation Thunder Strike IV”, was launched by a joint task force comprising personnel of the agency from Oyo, Ekiti, Edo Ondo and Osun states and men of the Nigerian Army.

The commandant said the intelligence-driven operation led to the seizure of tonnes of cannabis already harvested and heaped for onward movement to the illicit drug markets. He said his team visited two communities, Uzebba and Hikin, which were notorious for the cultivation of cannabis in Owan Local Government Area of Edo State, bordering Ondo State.

I can’t tell DSS to release Sowore – Attorney General, Abubakar Malami

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Monday, December 16th indicated that he could not ask the Department of State Service to release Omoyele Sowore from custody.

The minister said in the statement that he could not take a unilateral decision on the release of Sowore without recourse to the court, where the ‘RevolutionNow’ protests convener and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, are being prosecuted on charges of treasonable felony, among others.

This is contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, who stated that Malami was reacting to “the claim that a lawyer sent a letter to the AGF requesting the release of Mr. Sowore”.

The statement appeared to be a veiled reference to the letter by Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), sent to the AGF on Friday to demand the release of the convener of ‘RevolutionNow’ protests from the custody of the DSS.

The AGF’s takeover of the case was informed by the widely condemned invasion of the Federal High Court in Abuja by the operatives of the DSS to rearrest Sowore on December 6. Falana who heads the defence team of the two men informed Malami that Sowore had, since his rearrest on December 6, been kept in the DSS custody without the backing of any detention order of court or arrest warrant.

He stated that his letter became necessary after two lawyers in the team visited the DSS headquarters in Abuja to demand Sowore’s release but were advised to direct their request to Malami.

In a statement making a veiled reference to Falana’s letter on Monday, Malami said in the statement issued by Gwandu, “When parties submit their issues for determination to a court of law, they lack exclusivity of decision over such issues without recourse to the court. We remain guided by the established tradition and will not take unilateral decision without recourse to the rule of law”.

Bwala also confirmed the death of four out of five abducted aid workers of Action Against Hunger (AAH) who were recently killed by the insurgents.

He said;

“I am a principal lecturer with College of Education, Gashua, Yobe state. I was on my way to my station on the 27th of November 2019 that I was abducted.
“I appeal to the federal government to come to our aid. As you can see behind me are fellow Christians who were arrested on various points. I equally appeal to Christian association to do whatever is within their reach in order to rescue us because when we came, we saw some workers here, particularly workers with food organisation, however, shortly, they were executed.
“We also saw that the government has not done enough that is why Leah Sharibu is still with this group. We, therefore, appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari.”
