Ghanaian media are demonizing our citizens- Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, Olufemi Akiboye alleges

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana, Akiboye Olufemi, has accused Ghanaian media of ganging up to demonize and paint in bad light Nigerians residing in their country.

In a statement he personally signed and released yesterday Tuesday June 18th, the Ambassador said it was unacceptable for the Ghanaian press to refer to Nigerians residing in their country as Bunch of Criminals as there are Nigerians doing legitimate business in their country and contributing meaningfully to the growth and tdevelopment of their economy.

In his statement, Akiboye said it is unfair to give the impression that Nigerians based in Ghana are disturbing peace in Ghana, adding that there are Nigerians who are “astute businessmen, bankers, insurance brokers, teeming students as well as investors”.

“The Ghanaian Press, both print and electronic as well as social media seems to have enjoyed a field day in demonising Nigeria which for all intent and purpose, is seen as a fraternal brother to Ghana.

“Captions such as Kidnapping in Ghana: Data shows Nigerians are largely involved in the menace, Two Nigerians shot dead in Upper West, Five Nigerians nabbed for armed robbery, Nigerians attempting to kidnap 4-year old boy at Maimobi as well as the unresolved kidnapping of three Ghanaian girls in Takoradi, kidnapping of the Honorary Consul and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana, kidnapping of an Indian businessman and kidnapping of two Canadian girls in Kumasi recently rescued, have become worrisome daily reportage which has caused untold pains, agony as well as apprehension to the teeming law abiding Nigerians living in Ghana.

“Suffice to say that at times like this, a situation where five Ghanaians in company of three Nigerians allegedly kidnapped two Canadians but seems to enjoy wider press coverage as a crime committed by the Nigerians and considers Ghanaians only as accomplices leave much to be desired on the objectivity of such report. In the light of the above, the High Commission wishes to appeal to the local traditional media and social media to be highly circumspect in such reportage.”

The Ambassador stressed that the Nigerian government will not condone any of its citizens committing crime in the country, however, it is important for the Ghanaian media to report their crime stories with all sense of sincerity and not make it a habit to always pin crime stories on Nigerians residing in their country.

Photo: Nigerian man and his girlfriend arrested in Cambodia for online fraud

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday, charged and detained a Nigerian national and his Cambodian girlfriend for fraud after the couple cheated money out of a victim by using a fake online profile.

Major Ly Sopheak, a municipal military police official, identified the two accused as 31-year-old Nwosu Martins and his girlfriend, 35-year-old Kan Kalin. Both lived in a rental house in Chamkar Mon district’s Boeng Tumpon commune.

Maj Sopheak said that they were charged with fraud and face up to three years in prison if convicted.

He added that they were arrested by municipal military police last Tuesday in Por Senchey district after they allegedly cheated a 34-year-old woman out of nearly $4,000.

Maj Sopheak said that in February, Mr Martins created a fake profile using the name “Jerry Snow” and a photo of a foreigner before sending a friend request to the victim.

Maj Sopheak added that after the victim accepted the request, Mr Martins started talking to her, telling her that he was a US soldier based in Afghanistan and is set to retire in 2020.

The accused further claimed to have millions of US dollars and wanted to buy a condominium in Phnom Penh, telling her that he wanted to send her money so that she could buy the condo on his behalf before he would visit Cambodia next year.

Maj Sopheak noted that on May 15, Mr Martins told the victim that he had already sent her the money to buy the condo and told her to contact a transport company in Siem Reap province to retrieve it.

Maj Sopheak added that on June 1, a Cambodian man, who claimed to be the chief of the so-called transport company, alerted the victim about the money sent from abroad and required her to pay $550 as service fee. The victim transferred the requested amount through a Wing Transfer Money shop.

Maj Sopheak noted that on June 4, Ms Kalin called claiming she was a staff at the transport company and asked for another $5,300 from the victim as service fee, citing an excuse that the high fee was due to the large amount of money transferred. The victim negotiated the price down to $3,000 and transferred the amount.

Maj Sopheak noted that later that day, Mr Martins called the victim and asked for $4,700 for tax. The victim finally become suspicious and filed a complaint to the municipal military police.

He added that Mr Martins and Ms Kalin were arrested on June 11 at about 11.30pm when they travelled on a motorbike to a Wing Transfer Shop in Por Senchey district to retrieve the $4,700 they last requested.

After their arrest, military police seized the motorbike, $4,700 and five phones from them, including the phone used in the crime.

Bella Thorne breaks down in tears on Instagram over Whoopi Goldberg's remarks to her 'leaked' nude photos

American actress and singer, Bella Thorne has tearfully hit back at Whoopi Goldberg who seemingly shamed her over her recentl nude photo scandal.

Last week, Bella Thorne was the victim of a hack on social media where the actress revealed that the hackers had threatened to release her nude photographs so Thorne decided to release the photos on her own accord.

Reacting to the nude photos Whoopi Goldberg and other panelists on her show 'The View' had some pretty controversial views on the matter.

"If you're famous, I don't care how old you are... you don't take nude pictures of yourself. Once you take that picture, it goes into the cloud and it’s available to any hacker who wants it. And if you don't know that in 2019 that this is an issue, I'm sorry. You don't get to do that" Goldberg said.

In her response to Goldberg, a tearful Bella Thorne who became emotional over Goldberg's victim-blaming called out the 63-year-old saying;

"I was supposed to be on 'The View' but honestly I don't feel like being beaten down by a bunch of older women for my body and my sexuality. I just want to say that me watching this interview made me feel really bad about myself. I hope you're happy. I really do.

I really hope you're so f**king happy because I can only imagine all of the kids who have their s**t released and then they commit suicide. You're so crazy for thinking such terrible things on such an awful situation.

I don't really want you guys talking about your views to young girls. I would not want my [future] daughter learning that and I would never say that to her. OK, I'm done."

Thugs beat up Oshiomhole, 14 others in Edo State

Seidu Oshiomhole, the younger brother of the APC National Chairman and former Governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole was yesterday attacked and beaten up alongside 14 other lawmakers-elect in the state.

The lawmakers were reportedly holding a meeting at an undisclosed location when they were attacked by thugs allegedly hired by the state government.

According to reports, the meeting was necessitated by the Monday midnight inauguration of nine members of the new parliament and subsequent election of Frank Okiye as speaker. It would be recalled that just nine out of the 24-man Assembly met to elect a speaker in what many have been described as unconstitutional.

The ongoing crisis in the state assembly it was gathered is a result of a fresh rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole who however singlehandedly anointed him as a replacement.

The 15 lawmakers that were reported to have been attacked have however reported the case at the Police headquarters. They were led by Victor Tiger Edoror, a former deputy speaker who is also eyeing the leadership of the assembly.
