Alex Iwobi scores his first Premier League goal in 15 months

Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi scored his first league goal in 15 months late Tuesday January 12, as Everton secured a 2-1 away win over Wolverhampton in their Premier League clash at Molineux.

The Super Eagles star was on target in the sixth minute off an assist from Lucas Digne as he coolly finished Digne’s pass into the bottom corner to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side an early lead at the Molineux.

However, Wolves midfielder, Ruben Neves was on hand to restore parity for the hosts in the 14th minute.

Everton  later got the maximum points on offer through Michael Keane’s 76th-minute goal to win the away tie 2-1.

Before finally scoring in Tuesday night’s clash, the last time Iwobi scored in the Premier League was in September 2019 and interestingly it was also against Wolves.

Everton are now in the fourth position on the EPL standings with 32 points from 17 games and they are just four points adrift of new table toppers, Manchester United.

US executes the only woman on federal death row

Lisa Montgomery, the only female inmate on federal death row in the US, has been executed for murder.

The 52-year-old was pronounced dead at 1.31 am EST on Wednesday at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana in what could be the final federal execution under President Donald Trump.

She was executed by lethal injection after an 11th-hour order from the Supreme Court cleared all legal hurdles to carry out her death sentence.

Lisa is the 11th federal death row inmate to be executed during the Trump administration.

She was found guilty of federal kidnapping resulting in death and sentenced to death in 2007 for the slaying of mother-to-be. She strangled her to death and cut her baby from her womb using a kitchen knife.

Montgomery was convicted of killing 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett in the north-west Missouri town of Skidmore in December 2004.

She used a rope to strangle Stinnett, who was eight months pregnant, and then cut the baby girl from the womb with a kitchen knife, authorities said. Montgomery took the child with her and attempted to pass the girl off as her own, prosecutors said.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued an order removing the final legal barriers to the execution, and minutes later it became clear it was proceeding immediately with witnesses moved to the execution area.

The Department of Justice issued a new notice of execution, dated January 13, informing Montgomery that her death sentence would be carried out on January 13.

Kelley Henry, Montgomery's lawyer, in scathing remarks, called the execution, 'vicious, unlawful, and unnecessary exercise of authoritarian power.'

'No one can credibly dispute Mrs. Montgomery's longstanding debilitating mental disease - diagnosed and treated for the first time by the Bureau of Prisons' own doctors,' Henry said in a statement.

A Nigerian man in the diaspora was caught on camera instructing his "herbalist" to cause a woman and her children to run mad.

In a video that has gone viral, the man who was speaking Yoruba language and walking on the streets in a foreign country didn't know someone who understands his language was walking closely. The person filmed him while speaking and shared the video online.

He could be heard telling the herbalist that the work he did for him before wasn't effective and that he spent a lot of money.

“The wife and the child don't want us to sell the house.

The first one you did for me didn't work and I spent so much money on that.

I want you to help me to do it that the wife will sell the building.

What I want now is that I want the wife and the child to run mad. I want the wife not to know what she is doing" he said

The highly criticized Paul Pogba was the game saver for Manchester United in a close clash with Burnley late Tuesday night, January 12.

United were the better side and made their greater ball possession pay in the second half, and for the first time since September 2017, United are top of the English Premier League.

This puts the Red Devils in a good position as they travel to Anfield on Sunday to face eternal rivals, Liverpool.

Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Edinson Cavani started together but Burnley came out more aggressively and pinned United to their half.

An interchange of fouls-one saw Robbie Brady initially shown a yellow card which was rescinded after a lengthy VAR check. Kevin Friend then showed Luke Shaw a yellow card and awarded a free kick to Burnley.

United captain, Harry Maguire, had the ball in the net in the 37th minute but referee Kevin Friend ruled it as a foul on Erik Pieters. A minute later, Cavani attempted a bicycle kick that struck Ben Mee at point-blank range, but Friend waved away shouts of a penalty.

Nick Pope made a great save from a Martial effort on the 45th minute. There were four minutes added on, but both teams went into the interval level with United having 66% of ball possession.

The second half saw United upping the ante and Cavani should have scored the opener six minutes into the half.

Another shot on target from Fernandes failed to trouble Burnley as United played more in the Burnley half. Fernandes had another shot on target on the hour but still could not trouble Pope.

A clean volley from Paul Pogba took a small touch of Mee to beat Pope in the 62nd minute.

After the goal, Pogba became United’s driving force, both offensively and defensively.

Tarkowski then had a great chance to equalise in the 89th, but the ball didn’t quite sit well for a better strike on goal. Martial had another chance to seal the points in added time, but he shot straight at Pope.

United held on for their seventh away win of the season and now sit at the top position on the table.
