Buhari has failed and can’t solve our problems — Soyinka
Wole Soyinka on Sunday, July 14, 2019 lamented over the security challenges facing the country, and how President Buhari's alleged failed approach to the herders/farmers’ crisis.
The Nobel Laureate in his speech at the event where he played host to 85 pupils drawn from all the six geopolitical zones of the country to mark his 85th birthday, called for a national dialogue among all the people across party and ethnic lines as he alleged that President Buhari has failed.
“Governance is a very difficult occupation; Nigeria is a very complex nation for a lot of reasons; its history, the background, the formation of it, the complexity, the culture, balancing here and there and then, you have several complications like fuel, among others.
“Politicians that money has gone into their heads misdirect themselves in terms of priority, they neglect some sections, some of them are nepotistic and some of them alienate themselves from the public which is the people they are supposed to serve and govern and they think they are still colonial masters, especially when we went through the military period" he said.
On the Governor he likes most, Wole Soyinka said;
“The major problem that we have is successive governments; it is easier, on the state level, to say that this particular state is doing better than this state, but the central government, I am afraid, has failed and that is my view in the main to really serve the people intelligently, creatively and be even handed in their apportionment of facilities to various areas of the nation.
“Look at what is happening today, how is it possible for me to say for instance that I am pro this government, it is being negligent, look at what is happening with the cattle all over the place. That is a security issue which should never have reached this level.
“I am sure that carelessness and single act which has resulted in hundreds of people being massacred in their farms and their farms taken over; it has wiped away a lot of the positive achievements of the government.
“It is an issue that is so serious and which concerns the welfare of you and me that any carelessness or any failure there is totally unforgivable and unpardonable. It is not that one likes to criticise for the sake of criticising; no! It is just that we believe that there is a minimal level which any government which has been elected to power must achieve to be considered a true representative of the people. So, I am afraid I am waiting for you to grow up and become president.”

Justice Bulkachuwa cancels annual vacation for Justices of the Appeal Court
This year’s Annual Justices vacation for the Court of appeal Justices, has been cancelled by Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, President of the Court of Appeal.
In the press statement the media officer for the Court of Appeal Mr Saadatu Musa sent out, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa cited the "enormous petitions the Court is faced with, 2019 being an election year" as reason for the cancellation.
The 2-page circular which communicated the directive to the judges of the court, revealed that 65 election petitions relating to the last governorship, state House of Assembly, National Assembly and presidential elections had so far been either dismissed or struck out, while 735 were pending before 77 tribunals sitting across the country.
Presiding justices of the various divisions of the court, were asked to draw up a roaster to enable “the justices with medical appointments or other pressing family issues to travel for not more than 15 days within the period.”
“In divisions with three justices, only one justice can travel at a time and the office of the President of the Court of appeal is to be immediately notified to form a panel in that justice’s absence should the need arise,” the circular further directed.
“According to Justice Bulkachuwa, appeals arising from the National and State Assemblies would be heard by a local panel of three members, except where it is controversial, then the president will constitute and send another panel to hear it.
“On the governorship appeals, the president of the Court of Appeal disclosed that it would be heard by a five-member panel to be set up by his lordship.
“Hon. Justice Bulkachuwa, therefore, instructed the presiding justices to notify her as soon as appeals from governorship elections were filed to ensure their speedy determination" it added.
