How Abdul-salam, others looted NAMA’s N2.8b - Witness tells court

A witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nurudeen Bello, in the alleged N2.8billion fraud trial involving Ibrahim Abdul-salam, former Managing Director of Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, and others, on Friday, May 3, 2019, told Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court, sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos how the defendants looted, laundered and converted to their personal use N2.8billion, belonging to the agency.

Abdul-Salam is currently facing trial alongside Nnamdi Udoh (still at large), Adegorite Olumuyiwa, Segun Agbolade, Clara Aliche, Joy Ayodele Adegorite, Randville Invesment Limited and Multeng Travels and Tours Limited for conspiring to induce the agency to deliver the sum of N2.8billion to Delosa Limited, Air Sea Delivery Limited and Sea Schedule Systems Limited under the pretext that the money represented the cost of clearing NAMA's consignments.

At the sitting, Bello, an investigator with the EFCC, who was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, identified the statements of the third defendant written on February 15, 16, 18, 22 and 24, 2016 as well as on March 12, 2016.
Bello also identified the responses to the letters written by the EFCC to the Nigerian Customs Services, NCS.

The prosecution counsel tendered the statements of the third defendant, which were admitted in evidence as exhibits E 1-7 and F, respectively. When asked to read out the statement of account of Randville Invesment Limited, the witness listed various sums of money received by Belosa, withdrawn from NAMA account.

According to Bello: “The money was transferred to Randville Investment, which shared them among Multeng Travels and Tours Limited, Multeng Engineering, Multeng Aviation, NNPC Retail Limited, Airspace Delivery and some Bureau De Change operators. Cash withdrawals were mostly done by Segun Agbolade and Joy Ayodele Adegorite, for onward transfer to Segun Agbolade. Also, some cash payments were made to Mr. Alaba Odulani.”

Further in his testimony, Bello told the court that less than N9, 000,000.00 was transferred in tranches in one day and several days in different months. This, he said, "was done to avoid triggering the reporting requirements of banks, if the money transferred was up to N10, 000,000.00.”

The witness also stated that withdrawals made by Agbolade amounted to N3million in tranches, adding that “the transfers to Multeng Travel and Tours, Multeng Engineering, Multeng Aviation were made in order to facilitate withdrawals because of the cashless policy introduced by the CBN.”

According to him, “Several millions transferred to the NNPC Retail Limited were to supply petroleum products to the filling station owned by Agbolade. “The money transferred from Randville Invesment Limited to Mr. Odulani was for the purchase of a filling station in Egbeda, Lagos State.”

Bello had, during the previous sitting on Thursday, May 2, 2019, told the court that, on February 5, 2016, his team was assigned to investigate a petition against the defendant.
The prosecution counsel tendered the petition and the attachments which were admitted in evidence as Exhibits D.

Explaining what he did after receiving the petition, he said: “My team and I wrote to the bank, requesting the financial records of all the defendants. We also wrote to the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to obtain the records of importation made by the Nigeria Airspace Agency, NAMA, from 2010 to 2016.

“We wrote to Guaranty Trust Bank, attaching the NCS’s acknowledgement of payment receipt, seeking the authentication obtained by the bank. We received all the responses and same were analyzed.

“We proceeded to NAMA office, within Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, where we conducted extensive search and invited some of the defendants to the EFCC office.”
Also, when asked to identify exhibits A-C series and why the team wrote to the bank, he said the exhibits were some of the responses his team received from the letters sent to the bank.

“We wrote to the NCS based on the petition and subsequent investigations carried out. Various documents were analyzed and it was discovered that the sum of N2.8billion was carted away from the account of the National Airspace Management Agency by the defendants.

“The money was transferred at various times to the accounts of Randville Invesment Limited, Multeng Travels and Tours Limited, Air Sea Delivery Limited and Sea Schedule Systems Limited, belonging to some of the defendants and diverted for personal use under the pretext of using the said money for clearing of imported items for NAMA.”

The case was adjourned to June 13 and 14, 2019 for continuation of trial.

Micro-finance bank manager, 3 others sent to prison for N29m fraud

EFCC has secured the conviction of one Sani Abubakar, a former manager of a Microfinance Bank in Arugungu, Kebbi State, for offences bordering on conspiracy, forgery, obtaining money under false pretence and issuance of dud cheque to the tune of N29 million.

The convicts connived and forged contract documents and award letters from Arugungu Microfinance Bank and used same to obtain 800 units of motorcycles from the petitioner and diverted same to their personal use.

Justice Ibrahim Kangiwa of the Kebbi State High Court convicted Abubakar alongside three others, Abubakar Mohammed, Mainasara Kallamu and Abdulrazaq Abdullahi. They were charged to court on April 12, 2017 and faced eight charges to which they pleaded "not guilty "

To prove its case, the prosecution called five witnesses and tendered 22 exhibits. Justice Kangiwa noted that the prosecution proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt and sentenced them to three years in prison on count one, two, three, four and five.

On count six, they are all to serve seven years each, while on count seven they are to serve five years each. The first and second defendants were sentenced to two years in prison each on count eight. All sentences are to run concurrently without option of fine. Update: Gowon is in a stable condition after 'slumping' at a military funeral in Delta State

Update: Gowon is in a stable condition after
Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, is said to be in stable condition after reportedly slumping during the burial of late Maj. Gen. David Ejoor, in Ovwor-Olomu community within Ughelli-south local government area of Delta state.

Following the incident, Gen. Gowon was said to have been rushed by top military personnel at the event, accompanied by the Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and former Delta State Governor James Ibori, into a special tent where he was attended to.

However, a military source who did not want to be named told Channels Television that the former head of state did not slump but was merely overwhelmed with emotion and had to be led away.

The incident occured at the burial of late Gen. Ejoor who was a former Chief of Army Staff when General Gowon was Head of State.

North Korea 'test fires short-range missiles' for the first time since 2017

North Korea has tested several short-range missiles, according to reports from South Korea, its neighbour.

They were reportedly fired from the Hodo peninsula in the east of the country, said South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. This will be the first missile launch since Pyongyang tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in November 2017.

Last month Pyongyang said it had tested what it described as a new "tactical guided weapon". That was the first test since the Vietnam summit between the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, and US President Donald Trump, which ended without an agreement.

Firing a short range missile would not violate North Korea's promise not to test long range or nuclear missiles, but Pyongyang appears to be growing impatient with Washington's insistence that full economic sanctions remain until Kim takes serious steps to dismantle his nuclear weapons programme, says the BBC's Laura Bicker.

"We are aware of North Korea's actions tonight. We will continue to monitor as necessary" said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson offers automatic employment to Ijaw PhD holders

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has offered automatic employment to all PhD holders of the state origin, as well as those from other Ijaw-speaking states in the country.

The governor said beneficiaries of the offer included Ijaw from Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said in a statement on Friday that Dickson made the announcement while inaugurating the Committee for the Employment of PhD holders across Ijaw land.

The move comes a few weeks after the governor made a similar gesture for all first-class graduates of the state origin. He said the PhD holders to be employed would be deployed in the various state-owned tertiary institutions, including the Niger Delta University, the University of Africa, the Bayelsa Medical University, the College of Education and the Bayelsa State Polytechnic.

According to Dickson, the PhD holders’ employment, including those in the Diaspora, is part of the ongoing efforts of the government to reposition the state’s education sector and make it more viable. The statement said the committee was headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Kemela Okara, and that those interested could apply through the committee for immediate employment.

Mayor of Baltimore, Catherine Pugh resigns over corruption allegations surrounding her 'self-published children's books'

Mayor of Baltimore, Catherine Pugh has resigned amid investigations into lucrative business deals for her self-published children's books.

Her resignation follows an FBI raid of her home and an amendment proposed by Baltimore City Council that would make it possible to remove her from office. The Democrat earned thousands of dollars through sales of Healthy Holly books to city-linked public entities. They include health providers and schools.

Pugh has been on sick leave since 1st of April, recovering from pneumonia, according to her office. She announced her resignation on Thursday in a statement read by her lawyer, Steve Silverman.

"I am sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of the city of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor," the statement said.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who has called on Pugh to step down, applauded her decision as the “right” one, adding “it was clear the mayor could no longer lead effectively.”
