President Trump threatens to shut US-Mexico border over immigration crisis
President Donald Trump has escalated his persecution of immigrants and refugees, ordering the cutoff of all US aid to the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador because the right-wing US-backed regimes in all three countries (which comprise the so-called Northern Triangle of Central America) have been unable to halt the flow of desperate refugees moving north toward the United States.
“I’ve ended payments to Guatemala, to Honduras and El Salvador. No more money is going there anymore,” Trump told reporters at his estate in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The US president declared, “We were giving them $500 million. We were paying them tremendous amounts of money, and we’re not paying them anymore because they haven’t done a thing for us.”
Trump has also threatened to close the US-Mexico border this week if Mexico does not use force to stop immigrants from Central America passing through the country to reach American soil, where they seek to file claims for asylum status.
Such an action would have incalculable consequences, not just for Mexico, but for the United States, Canada and the entire world economy, since US-Mexico cross-border trade now tops $550 billion.
Major US industries such as auto would shut down within days if the supply of components produced in Mexican supplier plants was cut off.
On Friday, the State Department issued a statement declaring: “At the secretary’s instruction, we are carrying out the president’s direction and ending FY 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle. We will be engaging Congress as part of this process.”
Officials at the State Department and the US Agency for International Development were ordered to “redirect” assistance “away from these countries” and “cease and desist” all current spending. It is estimated that $500 million of the $620 million currently being expended in the three countries would be affected.

I can cause trouble for Nigeria if provoked —Nnamdi Kanu
Leader of the now proscribed separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal Government not to provoke him as he has the power to foment trouble that will make Nigeria ungovernable.
Kanu said this in a statement he issued over the weekend while reacting to the recent revocation of his bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja. The court in its ruling, said it has given the order because Kanu had failed to appear in court after his bail was granted in April 2017.
Kanu in his statement, described an alleged plan by the Federal Government to arrest him with the International Police as an effort in futility, stressing that he is a British citizen and so could not be subjected to any Nigerian law.
His statement in part reads
“I am not a Nigerian citizen; therefore, your bail revocation is completely meaningless to me. My devotion to the absolute and puritanical pursuit of the total restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Biafra is unwavering.
My lawyers are waiting for an Interpol red notice against my name and all hell will break loose. If the intention of Binta Nyako is to curtail my travels, thereby limiting IPOB diplomatic offensive, then let me assure Biafrans that our enemies have failed.
“Should they request Interpol intervention in this matter, I will give my lawyers here in the UK the instructions we need to launch a no-holds-barred legal assault against Nigeria.
“So, I am waiting for them. Europe and Interpol are not a bunch of wild beasts like Nigerian law courts and her security services. In Europe there is rule of law which is also binding on Interpol.
The treasonable felony charge they levelled against me is not a crime that could be committed by merely carrying Biafran flag about and preaching secession, but one that could only be committed using guns, bombs and other weapons, which my group has never been associated with. I warn the Federal Government not to dare me because I’m capable of causing trouble for Nigeria.”

Plane crash leaves three people dead in Germany
On Sunday, a small plane crashed in western Germany killing the pilot and two passengers believed to be Russian, police said, as a Russian airline identified one of the victims as its co-owner.
A police statement said the six-seater aircraft travelling from France to the town of Egelsbach south of Frankfurt went down in a field at around 1330 GMT. The cause of the accident was still unclear. “After impact, the aircraft was completely burnt out,” police said.
The police statement said the passengers would probably only be positively identified in the coming week. However Russian airline S7 said a co-owner of the company, Natalia Fileva, was among the dead.
Fileva, whose husband is S7 CEO Vladislav Filev, was listed in 2018 by Forbes magazine as the fourth richest woman in Russia with an estimated fortune of $600 million.
“On March 31, 2019, S7 Airlines shareholder Natalia Fileva was killed at the age of 55 during the descent in a private Epic-LT plane to (a) Frankfurt airport. The cause of the tragedy is not yet known,” the company said in a statement.
