Sport Illustrated names Golden State Warriors as Sportsperson of the year
Sports Illustrated has named current NBA champions Golden State Warriors as Sportsperson of the Year 2018.
Sports Illustrated explained its choice by noting how the champions made themselves collectively bigger and helped their team reached the top.
"For all the individual brilliance of Steph Curry - a selection whom few would have protested - the Warriors have always been most delightfully viewed through a collective prism. There have been superteams that have forced us to reimagine how the game is played, but none perhaps in a generation, maybe two, are so beautifully choreographed as the Warriors," Sports Illustrated explained.
"At the Dubs' most golden, their movements and pieces seamlessly blur into each other to the point where it impossible to distinguish the magic of one player from another, even magic so singular as that of Curry or KD."
"As with each of the Warriors' 64 predecessors, performance alone did not exclusively define Golden State. The rise of the Warriors has coincided with the restoration of the NBA as a leading edge of culture that recalls the league's prolonged boom, which began with the Magic-Larry years in the 1980s and continued through the Jordan-dominated '90s. The current boom, too, has coincided with the increasing intersection of sports and the hard questions of politics, race and identity, among others, that have so divided the country. The Warriors - forcefully but civilly - embraced the unique platform afforded them. No, they did not change the world and its attendant conflicts and ills, but they did not ignore them either."
The 65th annual presentation of the honor will go to the entire team, at a ceremony which will take place in Los Angeles today.

Photos: Man apprehended after he killed and buried a police officer to avoid paying N120k debt
The police in Ogun state have arrested a leader of Tiv Community in Opeji, Odeda Local Government Area of the state, Jonathan Tsekar, for allegedly killing a police corporal, Gbenga Adeboyejo over N120,000 he borrowed and did not want to return.
Parading the suspect before newsmen, the state commissioner of police, Ahmed Illiyasu, said the suspect and the victim, who was attached to Odeda Divisional Police, were engaged in a charcoal business before their business relationship turned sour.
Adeboyejo was reported missing by his father on December 1st. Investigations by the police led to the arrest of Tsekar who confessed that on November 24th, he invited the deceased to an isolated area where he used a plank to hit him on the head, ensuring he died so he would not refund the money he collected from him. He later buried the victim in a shallow grave at Opeji village.
When interviewed by newsmen, the suspect said he had no intention to kill Adeboyejo
“He (deceased) complained that his goods arrived late and we started arguing. He struck me with wood and I also struck him with the wood. I didn’t intend to kill him. When I realised he was dead, I dug a grave to bury him.”
Tsekar led to the police to the grave where the remains of the deceased was exhumed. The police boss said the suspect will be arraigned in court soon.

Strike: We have reached partial agreement with ASUU- Chris Ngige
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, says the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), might soon come to an end as the leadership of the union and the Federal government have reached a partial agreement.
Recall that the academic union began their strike action on November 5th to demand better funding for the Education sector.
Speaking after a reconciliation meeting with the union yesterday December 10th, the Minister told newsmen that the strike would soon be called off as efforts are being made to meet the demands of the union.
“We have finished our deliberation. I am happy to report that we touched some areas of understanding in implementation from the memorandum of action which we agreed to in 2017. Some of these areas we have substantial compliance and some other areas have not been fully dealt with. Like the issue of shortfall in salaries of some federal universities’ workers and lecturers, ASUU has given a list to the accountant-general’s office and we have agreed that by Wednesday that list should be cross-checked by the presidential initiative on continuous auditing. So, the accountant-general’s office is to get back to us by Wednesday.
“We also have the issue of earned allowances, revitalisation, these are issues of 2009 agreement and partial implementation and we have agreed on the modus operandi to look into the fund situation, this is due to low revenue on the part of government.
We have agreed on what we are going to do to make sure that the outstanding amount is handled in a way that all parties will be properly accommodated. We also discussed the issue of state universities and agreed also that even if education is on the concurrent list, the universities should be properly funded and staffed so that we do not produce half-baked students from those universities. In realisation of this, the ministry of education will set up a committee, that would engage the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and the minister of education has taken steps in that direction to formalise the interaction. Thus discussion are fruitful and we do hope that in the next adjourned date we would have had the requisite result on the few agreements reached today.” he said
Also speaking to newsmen, the National president of ASUU, Abiodun Ogunyemi, said
“Our own understanding is that we heard promises made on the part of government, we shall await the report on all the issues, which they have made the promises. Only after that, we can get back to our members to take a decision.”
