A Papua New Guinea flight has crash-landed in the Pacific Ocean after overshooting the runway by 160 metres, but all the 47 people on board miraculously survived.
The Air Niugini’s partially submerged Boeing 737-800 was flying from Micronesia's Pohnpei to Chuuk Airport, where it was scheduled to make a stop before continuing on to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. But the plane missed the runway and crashed into the water around 9.30am Friday local time.
All 35 passengers and 12 crew members were reportedly rescued safely but one passenger was injured. Locals reported broken bones are among the passenger injuries.
According to Mail Online, locals rushed out to the scene of the crash on small boats to help rescue passengers, who escaped the aircraft and were standing on the wings.
Chuuk Airport manager Jimmy Emilio told local media outlets the Air Niugini plane missed the runway by about 160 metre.
He added that passengers and crew have been taken to the local hospital, where they are currently undergoing checks.
