Pope meets with President Kagame, pleads for forgiveness for Catholic Church's role in Rwanda genocide (Photos)

Pope Francis has asked forgiveness for the role of the Catholic Church during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

In a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame at the Vatican, Francis said he hoped his apology would help promote peace in the African country, which was torn apart by genocide in 1994, and contribute to a 'purification of memory'.

Between April and July 1994, extremists from the Hutu ethnic minority killed more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority and moderate Hutus in Rwanda. International courts have indicted several Catholic priests for alleged involvement in the genocide.

In November 2016, the Catholic Church in Rwanda formally apologized for its role in the genocide for the first time but the Rwandan government rejected the apology as 'profoundly inadequate' and demanded a statement from the Vatican on the matter.

The Vatican said in a statement that the pope had 'implored anew God’s forgiveness for the sins and failings of the Church and its members, among whom priests, and religious men and women who succumbed to hatred and violence, betraying their own evangelical mission'.
After the successful meeting, which held on Monday, Kagame tweeted that the meeting marked a 'new chapter' in relations between Rwanda and the Vatican and that the apology was an 'act of courage.'

Senate to investigate Bukola Saraki and Dino Melaye over Range Rover Bullet proof SUV and certificate forgery allegations

The Senate has ordered its committee on Ethics to investigate Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senator Dino Melaye.

Former Majority leader, Ali Ndume this morning during plenary, drew the attention of the senate to reports on Sahara Reporters, accusing both Saraki and Melaye of been involved in shady acts.
Sahara Reporters in a story published two days ago, alleged that the senate is staging a war against Customs boss, Hameed Ali, because the agency seized Saraki's Range Rover Bulletproof SUV over fake duty particulars. The news website on the otherhand is alleging that Dino Melaye did not complete his first degree programme in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Ndume in his submission before the senate this morning, called on the senate to investigate these allegations as the reports according to him are bringing disrepute to the senate.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who is presiding over plenary, ordered the committee on Ethics to investigate these allegations and get back to the house within four weeks.

$9.7m: Court grants former NNPC boss, Andrew Yakubu N300m bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail in the sum of N300 million to former NNPC Managing Director, Andrew Yakubu, who has been accused of embezzling funds of the oil corporation while he was in office. Recall that on Febuary 10th, EFCC operatives raided one of his homes in Kaduna and found a fireproof safe that had in it $9.8 million cash and £72,000.

He was then arrested and first arraigned in court on March 16th Delivering judgement on his bail application, the presiding judge said Yakubu is to produce two suretees as part of his bail conditions.

Son of Nasarawa state governor, Umar Al-Makura, arrested for killing JJS2 student in car accident

One of the sons of Nasarawa state governor, Umar Al-Makura, Khaleed, has been arrested by the state police command for allegedly using his car to kill one Ovye Amos, a JSS2 student of Government Secondary School, Lafia on Sunday March 19th.

According to reports, Amos was out to buy batteries for his torchlight when he was knocked down by a car that was being driven by Khaleed.

Fellow students of the deceased staged a peaceful protest yesterday, demanding that the case should not be swept under the carpet and that Khaleed must face the full wrath of the law.

Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner for Education, Aliyu Tijjani, described the incident as a very unfortunate one. He confirmed the incident and said that Khaleed has already been arrested.

Norway has been voted the 'Happiest Country' on Earth

According to the World Happiness report released yesterday, Norway won the top slot to become the 2017 Happiest country on earth out of the 155 countries ranked by the report.
“Norway has insulated itself from the boom and bust cycle of many other resource-rich economies,” said the report, put together by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland held the next three spots. The rankings are determined by a handful of social and economic factors that “support happiness,” the report said. They include gross domestic product per capital, healthy years of life expectancy, social support, trust (absence of corruption in government and business), generosity (as measured by recent donations) and perceived freedom to make life decisions.

The U.S. dropped in the rankings this year to 14 from 13 as a result of what Jeffrey D. Sachs, one of the study’s authors, views as a social crisis.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has once again topped Forbes magazine list of the world's richest billionaires, for the fourth straight year, with a fortune of $86 billion.


Next is Berkshire Hathaway chief Warren Buffett, with an estimated wealth of $75.6billion, followed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, with a net worth of $72.8billion. Number four is Amancio Ortega - Inditex fashion group founder $71.3billion, while number 5 is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg with $56billion

Nicki Minaj has surpassed Aretha Franklin's record for the most hits on the chart of any female artist on Billboard Hot 100.

The rapper's recent songs 'No Frauds' featuring Lil Wayne and Drake, 'Regret In Your Tears,' and 'Changed It' featuring Lil Wayne took her tally to 76, leaving the gospel singer and previous holder at 73 songs on the chart.


Franklin is now in second place for the most Hot 100 entries by a female artist after holding the record for nearly 40 years.

Magu cannot be re-presented to the senate by President Buhari- Dino Melaye says

Senator Dino Melaye says President Buhari cannot re-present acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, for screening after he was rejected by Majority of the senators last week.

Speaking on Channels TV last night, Melaye said this when he was reacting to allegations that majority of the senators rejected Magu because they fear he might come after them if confirmed.





"I represent Kogi West and can only speak for myself. I am not facing any trial. I am not under any court. I am spaking as a representative of Kogi West. I am telling you that it is fallacious for anyone to think that Magu can be renominated. President Buhari who is a very upright Nigerian and one who I have respect for, cannot even by the provisions of our laws re-present Magu. Section 131 of the rules of the Senate provides as follows that once a nominee has been accepted or rejected by the Senate and communication has been done to the president by the clerk of the senate, that nominee cannot be re-presented to the senate"he said


Dino further stated that it would be a pity and a bad day for democracy and APC if Presidnet Buhari represents Magu for screening


"It will be a pity for the APC and it will be a sad story and a bad day for democracy in this country".

Mel B cited 'irreconcilable differences' in legal papers divorcing Stephen Belafonte (photos)

Former Spice Girl, Mel B is divorcing her husband, Stephen Belafonte after ten years of marriage. The singer who wed the producer in Las Vegas in 2007, cited irreconcilable differences in legal papers filed at Los Angeles Superior Court.

Mel, who has two other children from previous relationships, also listed 'joint custody' in the filing, opting to share responsibility of the their five-year-old daughter Madison. She is being repped by top family law attorney, Susan Wiesner.

It's one year already since the music industry lost Nomoreloss

Today, March 21, 2017 marks the first year anniversary of the death of Nomoreloss. The late Nigerian singer, Olumuyiwa Osinuga aka Nomoreloss who would have clocked 40 January 4, 2017 died on March 21, 2016.

The singer had been hospitalized after being diagnosed of Typhoid which ultimately led to his untimely death at the age of 39. Nomoreloss was buried on April 8, 2016 at the Ikoyi cemetery. May his soul continue to rest in peace.
