Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has admitted she "crumbled in private" when she was told Ashley Cole had cheated on her.
The couple married in 2006, but the singer filed for divorce four years later following claims the footballer had an affair - and she struggled to cope with the humiliation and heartbreak.
She told InStyle magazine: "I coped in public and crumbled in private. It's growth, it's life. They say a good sailor would never be a good sailor if he hadn't experienced a rough sea."
Cheryl - who is now married to hubby Jean-Bernard - revealed that many people who judged her for taking Ashley back have apologised after going through similar relationship troubles.
She added: "It's funny - those who didn't understand my actions at the time have now had that happen to them and they get it.
A friend of mine told me her husband was having an affair and she said, 'I understand everything that must have been going through your head. But what I will never understand is how you had to face the world.' "
Meanwhile, Cheryl is back on The X Factor for a second year in a row following her initial exit in 2011 - and she has blasted boss Simon Cowell for being "rude".
Commenting specifically on the music mogul's disappointed reaction when he found out he would be mentoring the Overs category, she was quick to lay into him.
"He wasn't exactly overwhelmed was he when he was told his category," she said on Good Morning Britain. "I think it was quite rude!
